Joseph Karaparambil, an acclaimed Indian-Canadian artist, is renowned for his incisive political cartoons, vivid caricatures, and evocative clay sculptures. Born on August 4, 1969, in India, he immigrated to Canada in 2002, bringing with him a rich artistic heritage inspired by his maternal granduncle, Bro. Vitalis OFM Capuchin. His bold, narrative-driven style has garnered international acclaim, blending sharp social commentary with technical mastery.

Joseph’s talent emerged early, winning first prize in a cartoon competition at Christ College, Irinjalakuda, at age 16. While studying at Shoranur Government Polytechnic, he earned top honors in cartooning and clay modeling in 1990, alongside recognition as Best Actor. That same year, he secured the prestigious state-level first prize in clay sculpture in Kottayam, establishing himself as a versatile artist.

In 1992, Joseph’s first political cartoon appeared as an editorial in a major newspaper, launching a prolific career. His works have since been featured in numerous print and digital publications, offering poignant commentary on social and political issues. His caricatures have been exhibited globally, including at the President’s Palace in New Delhi and, since 2009, through the Romanian Cartoonists Association in Romania and Poland, with select pieces now in the permanent collection of the Romanian Cartoon Museum.

A multifaceted creator, Joseph illustrated My Invisible Wings by Ranga Iyer and was featured in the 2013 International Contemporary Artists book published in New York. In 2015, his paintings were showcased at “Masala Mix: A Blend of Spices” in Edmonton, hosted by Imagination Miscellany, and highlighted at an exhibition by Alberta Premier Rachel Notley. In 2017, as part of Canada’s 150th anniversary, he was selected by the Works International Visual Arts Society and Imagination Miscellany as the featured BIPOC artist representing Edmonton’s cultural diversity.

Joseph’s paintings have been widely collected across Edmonton, Calgary, and Hamilton. In 2019, his cartoons and caricatures were featured in promotional materials for the Malayalam film Rameshan Oru Peralla, earning him a special recognition award. He also served as Art Director for the Alberta-based film Lia’s Echo. In April 2025, Easeleye International Art Magazine published an exclusive interview, spotlighting his creative journey and upcoming projects.

At the 2025 Belgrade Biennale, Joseph’s painting earned the Best Picture of the Gallery Award, selected by public vote, underscoring his global resonance. Beyond visual art, he shares his expertise through workshops on drawing and oil painting, nurturing the next generation of artists.

Currently, Joseph is blending his literary and artistic talents in Monstrous Gift, a sci-fi novel co-authored with his son, Jacob, enriched with his own illustrations. His official website, jkcreations.ca, reflects his philosophy: “Capturing Life in Art.” Joseph Karaparambil’s career embodies dedication, innovation, and a lasting impact across multiple creative disciplines.
